Alexander P. Hughes, MD
Director, International Fellowship in Spine Surgery and Research, Hospital for Special Surgery
Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Weill Medical College of Cornell University
Dr. Hughes uses his background in biomedical engineering to approach each patient as a unique individual and designs the most innovative and least invasive procedure for them. Dr. Hughes believes that one of the most critical factors in spine surgery is “getting it right the first time” for maximum patient benefit and outcome.
His areas of specialization include degenerative, deformity and trauma-related diseases of the cervical, thoracic and lumbosacral spine. Given his unique areas of research and international collaboration, he has a unique perspective on bone and connective tissue degeneration and how that impacts spinal disease. He is involved in developing next generation diagnostic, surgical and regenerative strategies for the spine and its supporting structures.
Dr. Hughes believes that being actively involved in research and critical thinking in spine surgery, as well as working in a collaborative environment, is the key to delivering the highest level of innovative care to each patient. Putting words into action, Dr. Hughes founded the International Fellowship in Spine Research at HSS. This research fellowship has brought surgeons from around the world to collaborate on the most challenging areas within spine surgery. These collaborations have led to innovations in muscle sparing minimally invasive lateral surgery as well as a better understanding of bone, muscle, disc and paraspinal connective tissue degeneration. This has led to improved strategies in the management of patients with spine related disease. A complete list of Dr. Hughes’ published research can be viewed here.
Dr. Hughes also founded the Multi-disciplinary Educational Conference at HSS as well as the HSS International Case Conference in Spine Surgery. These conferences bring together specialists in diverse spine related backgrounds (e.g., surgery, neurology, rheumatology, medicine, physiatry, anesthesia and pain management) to discuss challenging cases and arrive at the best possible solution for the individual patient.
Dr. Hughes is licensed to practice medicine in New York and New Jersey.
