In 2016, I was having severe pain in my left leg and numbness in my calf, leaving me unable to walk or stand for more than 30 seconds without experiencing pain. Simple tasks became almost impossible. I received epidurals for the pain and eventually an L5-S1 micro discectomy at another hospital, in which only part of the disc was removed. Following surgery, the disc was still impinging on the nerve, increasing the pain.
Anyone who has had an unsuccessful surgery, especially if the condition got worse, would understand that when I met Dr. Hughes I was apprehensive about having another surgery. But he made me feel at ease right away. He determined that the L5-S1 disc needed total removal, so I had fusion surgery two weeks later. He saved my life.
Following my surgery my leg pain was gone. At first, I had to wear a back brace but after six weeks I no longer needed it. After 12 weeks, I was able to do the things I enjoyed again, like golfing and running.
Even though I came to Dr. Hughes at a scary and unpleasant time, the entire staff and nurses were welcoming and empathetic. From all the pre-testing, including an MRI, to my follow-up visits, everything was very structured and smooth. I even received an itinerary with the times and locations for each test.
For anyone in a similar unpleasant and scary situation, I want them to know that Dr. Hughes and the entire staff make it as good as possible. Dr. Hughes truly saved my life.

Following a ski accident, I began experiencing leg cramping pain that was eventually diagnosed as sciatica over the course of three years. I was only able to walk for about 7-8 minutes at a time. I have a 15-minute walk from the train station to my office every day and I had to take breaks just to make it there and back. I was treated with epidural injections for about a year and they were effective, but then stopped working. Eventually, I had an MRI that showed two bulging discs. I was referred to a local surgeon who recommended surgery involving the fusion of two vertebrae. After doing some research, all of my findings led me to SpineCare of NY and HSS and I was convinced that this was the best spinal team and facility in the world. As an avid skier in the winter and a casual hiker in the summer, I needed to know that I would be able to make a full return to my activities after surgery.
From the first time I met Dr. Hughes I felt very comfortable with him and, above everything else, I was treated with the utmost respect, which I greatly appreciated. During my first appointment, he took the time to describe what the MRI revealed and explained to me why I needed three vertebrae fused and not just two. A model of the spine was used to show me in detail what the procedure entailed. We talked for quite a long time. I had many questions and may have asked a few twice. The manner in which he was able to articulate his answers, along with his patience, reassured me and gave me the comfort level I needed to proceed with this surgery. I had complete confidence in Dr. Hughes.
I have had a few other minor surgeries in the past from sports-related injuries. However, I was very worried about this surgery since it was so invasive in nature. Although the recovery was hard, it took a little over a year for me to completely recover, in retrospect it was actually a wonderful experience thanks to Dr Hughes and his team. From surgery to recovery and follow-up appointments, it was overall a smooth process. At my one-year visit, I still wasn’t completely recovered, but Dr. Hughes reassured me I was still healing, and I would get better. He was right – soon after that I was fully recovered, and it was all worth it. It has been five years since my surgery, I’m back to being an avid skier and casual hiker and I haven’t had any issues.
For anyone that may be facing a similar situation, I want them to know that there is hope. My surgery was a complete success. I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Hughes, HSS and the entire process.

I had a lower back and neck injury that resulted in left upper shoulder pain. My left arm was extremely weak and sometimes I couldn’t even lift it. I was in pain for a year and a half and misdiagnosed by a few other doctors before my surgery with Dr. Hughes.
When I first met Dr. Hughes, he didn’t want to rush into surgery. He was the first doctor to request an MRI, which was surprising but made me confident that he knew what he was doing. We tried physical therapy, medication and acupuncture before determining surgery was the best course of action. Once we decided surgery was the best option, he took the time to explain exactly what he was going to do in surgery so I had a clear understanding of what to expect. I really applaud Dr. Hughes because he is one of the few doctors I have ever had confidence in. I was completely reassured going into surgery.
Recovery was challenging but after about three months I started to feel better and the pain was starting to subside. Before surgery I couldn’t work out, lift weights or play basketball. Even carrying a case of water in from the store was a challenge.
If I could tell others one thing about Dr. Hughes it’s that you shouldn’t be afraid to ask him questions and talk to him. He doesn’t rush you and makes sure you know what to expect. This eased my nerves and made me confident that he knew what he was doing. He also puts the final decision in your hands – he only gives his advice but wasn’t pushy at all, which I appreciated very much.

I had been suffering from back pain and sciatica for several years. I went to physical therapy and received injections in hopes of relieving my pain, but the first injection didn’t last long and the second one didn’t work at all, so I became desperate. I could barely walk because of my sciatica pain and I had herniated discs, among other things, with the pain getting worse through the years.
Someone told me about HSS and, after doing research on my own, I knew that was the best option for me. I had my first appointment in August and went through some preliminary tests before meeting with Dr. Hughes. He had an opening in his surgical schedule for the following week but I was worried because I had a trip planned to Africa in October. Dr. Hughes reassured me that I would be able to go on my trip, so I agreed to the surgery.
Following my surgery, I started physical therapy right away and had to wear a back brace for a short time. The staff did everything for me, including scheduling my physical therapy. My recovery wasn’t bad at all and I was just so thankful that I would be able to walk again without pain. I did everything the physical therapists and doctors told me because I was determined to get better.
Before my surgery, I used to swim every morning and do a lot of walking, traveling and volunteering, but my pain impacted these parts of my life. But ever since my surgery, I’ve been traveling around the world, and when I’m not traveling to Africa, Patagonia or Morocco, I’m hiking at home.
I am so grateful to Dr. Hughes and everyone on his team. I had such a good experience, from the surgery and follow-up visits, to the office staff, everything was great.

Due to an injury in college, I’ve had trouble with my lower back for years. I had two previous surgeries to cure the resulting pain. Unfortunately, over time the pain recurred. I could not walk, straighten my back, walk my dogs or get to sleep due to the spasms that wouldn’t quit. The relief of the constant pain required a much more invasive procedure. Not only were revisions of the previous surgeries required, but also almost the entire lower spine needed treatment from L2 to S1, a really big deal!
I’m a dentist and because of my constant radiating back pain, it made it difficult for me to treat my patients’ needs, a big problem. I knew that Hospital for Special Surgery was the number one rated Orthopedic Hospital in the U.S. Therefore, it was clear – being treated there was a no brainer. So now I had to pick the best spinal surgeon I could from the list of excellent doctors to correct my problem. And did I hit the jackpot…Dr. Andrew Sama!
At the first meeting with Dr. Sama, it was crystal clear that he was the surgeon for me. It was obvious that he loved his profession. His passion showed as we discussed what he needed to do to correct my intractable pain, and his credentials speak for themselves.
A few weeks after my surgery I was back at work and could finally practice orthodontics without back pain. I was able to walk my dogs again and sleep without the unremitting back spasms. I love my work, and Dr. Sama made it fun. I got my life back again.
As an aside, Dr. Sama has operated on my wife, sister and some of our friends with spinal problems. All of us had the same successful outcomes. We are all so very grateful to have been treated by this wonderful doctor.
Personally, I have never been more impressed by any medical provider (including my father, a terrific ear, nose and throat physician) than Dr. Andrew Sama. He is this whole package – a highly skilled physician and a real people person, sensitive to his patients’ needs. He is one of my real heroes!

I lived with spondylolisthesis and spinal stenosis for many years. I’m a physical therapist and lead an active lifestyle so I did not wish to slow down. I lived through lower back pain and numbness of my toes and part of my feet by using over the counter medications and adapting my physical movements to compensate for my condition.
I didn’t pursue treatment for many years until the time finally arrived when my entire left leg would become totally numb causing me to lose control of the movement of that leg after walking only one or two blocks. When that happened, I would need to stop walking for a minute or two until the numbness subsided so that I was able to regain control of my leg and resume walking. This happened repeatedly until either I sat down to rest for 15 to 20 minutes or I was done walking. Having already tried physical therapy exercises on my own, I decided to see an anesthesiologist for a series of three epidurals. While the numbness in my feet and left leg and other symptoms totally went away, they always slowly reoccurred. It was then that I knew the epidurals were not a long-term solution.
I then sought the opinion of a neurologist who discussed my situation with me. He indicated that if I delayed surgery any longer, I would be putting myself in a very dangerous situation. That’s when I decided to find a qualified surgeon.
As a physical therapist, I was familiar with spine doctors in New York City, and specifically with Dr. Cammisa. Over the years I heard firsthand how he had successfully treated patients of other physical therapists that I knew.
During my initial appointment I was examined first by Dr. Cammisa’s physician assistant (PA) and then by Dr. Cammisa. During my exam he asked me questions and discussed my scans with me. He was very direct and clear about what needed to be done. He spent time listening to me very carefully and answered all my questions. This discussion assured me that he had all the necessary information about me prior to doing the surgery. At the conclusion of my appointment I felt very reassured that I had chosen the right surgeon.
I underwent a fusion with rods and laminectomy on both sides of my spine and needed to wear a brace for a few months afterwards, which I was fitted for at my first appointment. I could walk normally immediately after my surgery and the symptoms in my left leg were totally gone. I did still have the partial numbness in my feet and toes. I was able to walk one hour each day. I immediately resumed all nonstrenuous activities at home and, after 3 months, I slowly resumed my gardening, spin class and gym exercise routine.
I can’t begin to express how grateful I am to Dr. Cammisa and the entire staff. Everyone in the office was very nice, professional and efficient. I knew how unstable my spine was and my symptoms were frightening, but now I have my life back thanks to Dr. Cammisa. I often think of him as I go about my busy life and continue to send him a card every Thanksgiving to tell him how thankful I am.

Starting my first season as a New York Met in 2016, I was set to have the best offensive year of my career, but unfortunately a herniated disc in my lower back from 2012 was about to change all that. I suffered from pain down my left leg and back for years and treated it with physical therapy and exercise. I knew it was only a matter of time before I couldn’t play with the injury and would need a new treatment option. I didn’t want to risk hurting myself even more, so I met with the Medical Director of the Mets. He recommended I meet with one of the best spine surgeons in the country, Dr. Frank Cammisa.
During my first appointment with Dr. Cammisa we discussed all possible treatment options and ultimately decided that surgery was the best choice. Dr. Cammisa performed a micro discectomy and I knew right away that the surgery was a success. I was up and walking just a few hours following my surgery. Within the first three days, the nagging pain I had been feeling for years was completely gone and I began rehab a few weeks later. Within three months, I was back to my normal routine of exercise and weight training, free of pain.
I knew that I was receiving the best care possible with Dr. Cammisa and his entire team and I couldn’t be happier to have had my surgery with him. I feel the best I ever have, and my MVP is Dr. Cammisa.

I had one of the first surgeries when SpineCare of New York resumed surgeries in May following a temporary hold on procedures due to COVID-19. I was given a COVID-19 test prior to my surgery and although I was nervous, the environment at SpineCare of NY put me at ease. There were so many safety measures in place to ensure that everything was clean, and the staff was clearly taking extra precautions.
Because of the enhanced safety measures they implemented, I could not have anyone accompany me into the hospital for surgery. As difficult as it was to have surgery without my husband being there, the entire staff, especially the nurses, were so nice and comforting. The nurses were constantly checking on me and were there to help me whenever I needed it.
I have had back and neck pain for years, but recently it started to get much worse. It was very difficult to walk and move my arms because of my stenosis and arthritis. Dr. Sama actually performed neck surgery on me in 2019 to correct another surgery I had in 2018 with a different doctor that didn’t go very well. When I went to Dr. Sama in 2019 to correct that surgery, there were so many differences in the quality of care during my first appointment. I began to notice how much more thorough the process was when I had X-rays and imaging done. Dr. Sama was very kind and patient. He really took the time to answer all my questions and walk though my X-rays. Dr. Sama even sent me to a specialist when he did my neck surgery to make sure my vocal cords would not be affected. So when I knew I needed to have back surgery, he was the only option for me. Even though I was having major surgery during a very frightening time, Dr. Sama made me feel very calm and safe. He exudes a sense of calmness that really reassures you.
The recovery period is a process and I’m still doing physical therapy, but it was well worth it. After my surgery, any time that I had a question and called the office, someone got back to me right away. Dr. Sama and the entire staff made the whole process as easy as possible. Thanks to them, I can now walk and move my arms easily without pain. Having confidence in your doctor and their staff is the most important thing, and I certainly had that with Dr. Sama and SpineCare of NY. I would tell someone in my situation not to be afraid. If you are in pain, go for it. Have the necessary surgery because you are in good hands with Dr. Sama.

I’ve had an absolutely wonderful experience with Dr. Sama! I found him after I’d already been rejected by other doctors for having a case that was “too complicated.” I was in terribly excruciating back pain, and completely hopeless that I wouldn’t be able to be helped. Dr. Sama put me at ease right away and told me that he would do everything he could to help me. He’s smart, funny, confident, and has an unparalleled bedside manner. His office runs like a well-oiled machine. Everyone on his staff is just as lovely as he is. I never had to make one follow-up phone call or email, and anything I needed or any questions I had were taken care of or answered immediately. The level of communication was amazing. Regarding surgery, Dr. Sama fully explained every option available and made sure that I understood everything. I was confident in his recommendation.
I was definitely terrified to have major surgery during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic; however, I was 100% confident that Dr. Sama would take the best care of me. He and his staff took the absolute highest level of precaution to make sure that I was safe. On the morning of my surgery, I had to walk into the hospital completely alone, but HSS nurses and staff were welcoming and supported me with open arms. Even though my husband couldn’t be with me, I felt as though I had family there to support me, from the time I walked through the doors, to the time of my discharge. Dr. Sama made sure that I was comfortable, confident and that I had emotional support!
My surgery was a great success; he gave me my life back!!! I would highly, highly recommend Dr. Sama to anyone!!!!

Before going to see Dr. Sama, I was in constant pain. I had to sleep in a chair for several months because I could not lie down. I had numbness in my left leg and I could not walk more than 25 feet at a time. After my initial appointment, the process to my surgery proceeded very quickly because I was evaluated as being in immediate need. During surgery, Dr. Sama removed some of the calcification around my spine, inserted a rod on each side and cages around two of my vertebrae.
I believe the success of surgery is greatly determined by the care of the surgeon after the operation. Dr. Sama is very approachable and was available to answer all my questions. My surgery and recovery were much easier because of the care and concern of Dr. Sama and the courtesies of his staff. After my surgery I started with private physical therapy for six weeks. Now, I exercise five days a week, still following the program recommended for me. I am now nine months post-surgery and I am doing great. I no longer have any back pain. I only occasionally feel slight pain down my legs at the end of the day when I exert myself too much, but Dr. Sama advised me that will go away soon.
After going through surgery and the recovery process, I would give Dr. Sama and HSS the highest rating possible. Dr. Sama is not only the most skilled surgeon, but he also has a great personality and maintains a good relationship with his patients. If you find yourself in the same condition I was in before surgery, I suggest that you listen and believe in Dr. Sama’s ability to treat severe back problems. Before my surgery, I felt like I could not do anything because of the constant pain I endured. Now, I no longer feel restricted in my life. I am very thankful to be a patient of Dr. Sama.

As a child I had scoliosis, but I never had any symptoms, so it wasn’t until later in life that I was diagnosed. I was very athletic growing up and staying in shape has always been important to me. It wasn’t until I started a new workout class involving a lot of twisting that I started to have back problems. One day in class, I twisted a certain way and immediately felt a very intense pain in my lower back. At this time, I was already under the care of three doctors at HSS for various reasons. After a month of experiencing this severe pain, all three of my doctors referred me to Dr. Sama.
Dr. Sama is an amazing doctor and his entire staff is always so kind and very friendly. During my first visit, Dr. Sama did an MRI and really took his time to explain everything to me to ensure I fully understood my condition and treatment options. At first, we tried alternatives to surgery, including injections, before Dr. Sama determined that surgery was the best course of action. Altogether, I have had three successful surgeries with Dr. Sama – my most recent being a fusion.
If I could tell someone in a similar situation anything it would be to have the surgery, but understand it is a process requiring dedication. Recovering after surgery is very involved. I did physical therapy at HSS for a while and continue doing Pilates four times a week at the hospital – even during COVID-19 through Zoom using my Pilates Cadillac at home. I still continue to exercise regularly to maintain my health.
Although the road to recovery has not always been easy, I am so glad that my doctors recommended I make an appointment with Dr. Sama. Dr. Sama really is the best. Before each operation, he made sure to explain every detail to me and everyone in the office also made sure I had all the information I needed. Dr. Sama even called me personally to check in after my surgery. He is very caring and the welcoming environment of his office is very reassuring. I love exercising, being active and taking walks. Because of Dr. Sama I am able to continue to do those things!

I had been living with spinal stenosis for 30 years, but it didn’t always bother me. For some time, I didn’t even know I had it. Over the years it got worse and then I herniated a disc. I felt numbness and pain all the time. By 2017, I couldn’t walk 50 feet without taking a break to stretch. I was a teacher and standing was difficult – I sat whenever I could. It got to the point where I couldn’t even stand in front of my class anymore. I had to lean on my desk or sit down. Going to parties was no longer enjoyable because I couldn’t stand and talk to my friends and family. Attending an event like a Met game or Broadway play involved so much walking and standing on lines that I didn’t look forward to them.
I started to miss out on all the things I enjoyed doing – I could no longer run half marathons or do triathlons. I play the drums in a band, which I could only continue doing because I was sitting, however, the lifting that was involved in setting up before a show was really tough. I always had pain, it never went away, and I could never forget about it.
When I started asking people for recommendations, I found out that my uncle had surgery with Dr. Cammisa 20 years ago. I saw how well he recovered and, at age 90, still does not have issues with his back! I knew he was the right surgeon for me. In 2018 I made an appointment with Dr. Cammisa and that’s when my life changed radically for the better.
The entire process was amazing. From the financials, to the medical, to all the arrangements and logistics. Even down to the guy who makes your eggs in the cafeteria. The entire staff is completely dialed in. They are so organized and on top of everything. If I had questions, it was never hard to speak with someone, whether on the phone or in person.
I had surgery in December of 2018 and a week later I was walking three quarters of a mile. At six weeks I started physical therapy and by 12 weeks I was considered fully recovered. A year later, I’m walking 10 miles a day. I’m back to doing everything that used to cause me pain – playing racquetball, swimming, running and playing the drums in my band. Most importantly, I’m able to pick up my grandson, something that would have been very painful for me a year ago.
If I could tell someone in the same situation that I was in a year ago one thing, it’s that you will immediately get the feeling that you’re in good hands. You just know that you’re working with dedicated, knowledgeable people who take pride in what they do and that was such a huge comfort to me.

After suffering from stenosis and scoliosis for a number of years and after traveling to Miami from Panama to undergo a spinal fusion, my symptoms returned eight years later. Many friends of mine in Panama City recommended Dr. Frank Cammisa. With the help of the HSS International Center, I was able to set up an appointment. At each visit, I was assisted by someone from the International Center who could translate for me and help me around, making my time there much easier.
Dr. Cammisa operated on both my lumbar spine and cervical spine with successful outcomes. In Panama, there is a saying, “First God and then Dr. Cammisa!” I am extremely grateful for Dr. Cammisa’s care and professionalism. Today, I have a better quality of life and can truly enjoy my family and grandchildren, all because of Dr. Cammisa.

A good friend of mine, who experienced firsthand the professional services of Dr. Hughes and his incredible team, highly recommended Dr. Hughes as the best spinal surgeon. Under his care I required spinal decompression and fusion. Between the consultation, surgery and follow up, my hopes and expectations were far exceeded.
Dr. Hughes’ staff demonstrated a compassionate approach by giving an appropriate recommendation or solution. Everyone I met was professional, upbeat and welcoming.
Dr. Hughes and his physician assistant had reviewed and formulated their plan in advance, which in turn was presented to me in a thorough, comprehensive way.
He explained the entire situation that had occurred over a period of time to my vertebrae, step-by-step in a manner that was extremely engaging and not intimidating in any way. Dr. Hughes is kind in nature, calm, patient and caring. He listened to each question and answered each fully. He addressed my anxiety and gave me a complete sense of calm in what was otherwise a painful and overwhelming event.
The morning of the surgery I ran into Dr. Hughes in the hallway where he told me that he had one procedure before me and that things should be running very much on time. The nurse and anesthesiologist were engaging and reassuring about the process.
After surgery, Dr. Hughes informed my wife that it was a 100% success! My stay at the Hospital for Special Surgery was exemplary. Dr. Hughes visited three times to check on my progress. On the days he was not there, I was visited by his associate fellows.
My post-surgical recovery has been phenomenal. At week seven, I am back at work 3/4 time with mobility I have not had for years. I have been in constant communication with the staff, PAs and fellows with any question or concern that I’ve had throughout my recovery. I am completely grateful, pleased and satisfied with my entire experience. I will always recommend Dr. Hughes, his practice and his affiliation with the Hospital for Special Surgery.

After suffering from severe stenosis and multiple herniated discs, I was in a lot of pain. I tried improving my condition through physical therapy, as well as multiple cortisone injections. I reached a point where I could not sit down or stand up without experiencing incredible pain. I realized that I couldn’t live that way and that’s when I met with Dr. Cammisa.
After his initial evaluation, including an MRI, he recommended surgery as the best option, and I decided to proceed. Dr. Cammisa performed a laminectomy and two microdiscectomies. After the procedure, I woke up with no pain and felt immediate relief.
I now feel better than what I could have ever hoped for before surgery. The entire staff at SpineCare of NY and HSS was not only professional and friendly, but also very sympathetic to my pain. Dr. Cammisa took his time to explain everything to me and lay out my options – I never felt rushed.
After I developed a herniated disc from a gym injury in 2012, I experienced pain in the days following regular physical activities. It then got to a point where I could no longer enjoy golf, weightlifting, basketball or even picking up my children without having to spend multiple days recovering from the pain. I addressed this discomfort with a previous doctor and dedicated many hours to physical therapy, but I was not getting any better.
In March of 2021, I started to experience sciatic pain and while simply walking to lunch after playing golf in September, I sneezed and was instantly in excruciating pain. That Monday, I decided enough was enough, and I made an appointment to see Dr. Cammisa. He was calm and very matter-of-fact about my condition which helped me feel at ease. Instead of immediately suggesting surgery, he developed an entire treatment plan that involved cortisone shots to see if that would improve my condition. Eventually, it became evident that surgery was the best option for me.
Before surgery, Dr. Cammisa explained my entire procedure in a way that was easy to follow. Dr. Cammisa and his staff continuously checked in on me throughout the entire process and made sure I knew exactly what was going on.
After Dr. Cammisa performed my microdiscectomy, I woke up completely pain-free. After five months of physical therapy, I played my first full 18 holes on the golf course. I can even play basketball again without pain in my back and legs. I couldn’t feel more satisfied with my decision to have Dr. Cammisa as my doctor – this surgery turned my life around. My biggest regret is not doing the surgery earlier, once you’re at a certain point of pain, you don’t just get better.
For anyone experiencing life-altering pain, I would suggest finding a surgeon like Dr. Cammisa, who makes it easy to weigh all options and find the best approach to return to a life without pain.

Before my surgery at SpineCare of NY and HSS, I was suffering from severe scoliosis and degeneration in my lumbar and cervical spine, which made it incredibly difficult to stand or walk for any length of time. I couldn’t clean my house, I had to take breaks while getting ready for work in the morning and I wasn’t able to attend my family reunion. Worst of all, it was difficult for me to hold my grandson.
My back pain eventually weakened my body, and the curve in my spine caused my left rib to rest on my pelvis, so breathing was difficult. I finally started to talk to doctors at the end of 2019 after battling with this pain for three years. I met with four doctors in my home state of Ohio before one of them recommended I go to HSS in New York City.
Once I met Dr. Cammisa, I was immediately satisfied with my choice to select him as my doctor. He was extremely thorough, compassionate and understanding. He answered all of my questions and didn’t rush me through any part of the process. I was really worried about the cost of having surgery and living so far away from home, but Dr. Cammisa and his staff worked with me to schedule all of my testing and appointments in one day.
Dr. Cammisa performed a spinal fusion, and I am planning to go back to have cervical surgery. Immediately after the spinal fusion, I was able to breathe better. On the day of my discharge, Dr. Cammisa’s staff coordinated everything I needed – even my ride. The entire staff made me feel so relaxed and comfortable.
When I returned home, I didn’t have to spend any of my days bed ridden. By the second week, I no longer needed a cane or walker unless I was going a considerable distance. Now, just about two months after my surgery, I can walk over a mile, an activity I have not been able to do in years. Throughout my recovery, Dr. Cammisa’s pain management team met with me multiple times to ask about my progress and answer my questions. Each member of the staff was so nice and easy to work with.
The quality of care I received from Dr. Cammisa and SpineCare of NY was amazing. I used to read these testimonials and wondered if all of the positive reviews could be true, and now I know that they are. If you are looking for a well-orchestrated team of trustworthy healthcare professionals, Dr. Cammisa and SpineCare of NY is your best option. I am thoroughly happy with my decision to make the trip to New York City for this life-changing procedure.

When I received my first spine surgery 30 years ago, I had met with seven surgeons before deciding to put my confidence in Dr. Cammisa. During our initial appointment with him, my wife and I knew he was the right choice.
About a year ago, I began losing strength in my legs and was in constant, excruciating pain. I could no longer play golf or walk my dog without longing to get back in my chair. I went to see a primary physician who diagnosed me with a pinched nerve. Dr. Cammisa was the obvious choice for my next call after having such a great experience with him. He suggested I meet with another doctor to do a series of epidurals before considering surgery.
The epidurals worked for about 3 to 4 months before the pain down my right leg returned. I tried one more epidural, but I still found it difficult to do any sort of walking. This was a miserable time in my life, and I didn’t want to spend any more time feeling like this. I contacted Dr. Cammisa and went through pre-op testing and scans before he determined surgery was necessary.
In June of 2022, Dr. Cammisa performed a minimally invasive Laminectomy where he operated on discs 1 through 5 and removed two cists from my spine. After a year of pure agony, I woke up in the recovery room completely pain free.
Although my recovery process has been time-consuming and my leg strength isn’t quite where I want it to be yet, I have not felt pain since before surgery. I’m hoping to be back on the golf course soon.
Dr. Cammisa is not just one of the finest surgeons in the world, but one of the finest people in the world. He’s the kind of person you have immediate confidence in. I’ve recommended a few people to him over the years and everyone has come away from it with the same experience.
I feel like I have my life back thanks to Dr. Cammisa. If anyone else is contemplating surgery, just know that it gave me my life back – it’s that simple. Being pain free is an enormous gift.

I would like to express my gratitude and complete satisfaction with Dr. Hughes and all the SpineCare of NY staff, as well as the staff at HSS!
I started experiencing lower back pain a couple years ago and it progressively got worse, preventing me from doing many things. I have always been an active person and enjoyed going to the gym and taking long walks, but as my back pain progressed it became harder for me to remain active. Eventually, I stopped going to the gym, and it even became hard for me to walk down to my mailbox each day. After years of physical therapy and meeting with other specialists, I realized that I needed surgery to fix the pain and I decided on Dr. Hughes.
After my first appointment with Dr. Hughes I knew I wanted him to be my doctor. He explained everything to me in detail and ensured that I felt comfortable throughout the entire process. I had spinal fusion surgery in July 2022. The entire staff made the surgery process seamless from beginning to end, always prioritizing my comfort.
My results were outstanding, thanks to Dr. Hughes’ skill and precision! I was walking right away after the surgery, walking 10 feet the day of the surgery. After about 4 or 5 weeks, I was walking up to 3 miles per day. Just six months after my surgery, I feel completely back to normal and better than I have in years. When I had my six-month follow-up appointment with Dr. Hughes, I took time to walk around New York City and ended up walking almost seven miles. I never thought I would be able to walk without pain again, but thanks to Dr. Hughes this is now possible. I can’t say enough how appreciative I am for his skill and expertise and for him giving me back my life!
Thanks to Dr. Hughes, I’m able to play with my granddaughters without any pain, which was not possible before. I continue to tell people about Dr. Hughes and recommend him to any person who is experiencing back pain because he is really the best. I have nothing but praise for his bedside manner and the compassionate care he assured me I would have. On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate him a sure 12! Thank you, Dr. Hughes!

I started experiencing excruciating pain in my leg and hip two years ago, which eventually made it difficult for me to even walk 10 feet without stopping. I tried many things with hopes to alleviate the pain I was feeling. After visiting a chiropractor, receiving acupuncture and two epidurals, the pain persisted, and I knew I had to try something new. Luckily, an acquaintance recommended Dr. Hughes at SpineCare of NY and I am so happy I made an appointment with him.
I had surgery to correct a stenosis of the spine with Dr. Hughes in January 2023 and I could not be happier with the results. Dr. Hughes and the entire SpineCare and HSS staff were amazing throughout the entire surgery process. They prioritized my comfort, and while I was recovering, they made sure that I had everything I needed. It was clear that Dr. Hughes is very experienced, he took his time with me and did exactly what he said he would.
Dr. Hughes is truly remarkable, I even call him the “wonderman” because he completely alleviated my pain. After only three months, I feel completely back to normal – I have never felt this good in my life. I no longer have difficulty walking and am already preparing to return to work. If you are experiencing pain like I was, I suggest visiting Dr. Hughes and the amazing SpineCare staff.
Linda

Before my surgery with Dr. Hughes at SpineCare of NY, I was experiencing back pain that first started when I was just 18 years old. I am now 75 and my back pain only got worse as I entered my 70s, making it hard for me to do simple things like get out of bed, which would take my breath away because of the pain. Daily tasks that are easy for most people, such as getting out of a chair and standing in one place for a period of time, were challenging for me due to my ongoing back problems. Over the years I have tried everything from physical therapy and yoga, to seeing a chiropractor, but the pain was consistent.
My spinal fusion surgery took place one year ago and from my first appointment with Dr. Hughes, I knew I picked the right surgeon and hospital. Dr. Hughes made me feel completely comfortable throughout the entire process and allowed me to ask any questions I had leading up to my surgery. He was warm and approachable and took the time to explain to me exactly what would happen during the surgery. I have had fourteen surgeries throughout my life, and this experience with Dr. Hughes was the smoothest. The entire process, even the day of the surgery, was quick and seamless.
There are so many things I can now do after my surgery that I wasn’t able to in the past. I have no limitations, and it is very refreshing. I can take walks without pain, which is something I struggled with before the spinal fusion. I also am able to prepare dinners – something so simple that I wasn’t able to do because of the pain from standing. One of the most fulfilling things about living with no restrictions is that I can pick up my two granddaughters without hesitation.
The entire SpineCare staff acted as my cheering section. They were remarkable, and I do not believe I would have been able to get through the recovery process without their continuous support and reassurance. Following the surgery, I was able to call with any questions or concerns and they answered promptly and made me feel comfortable. I recommend SpineCare of NY for anyone looking into spinal surgery.

Before my surgery with Dr. Sama, I felt like I couldn’t do anything. It was difficult for me to walk without stopping, bend down, lift things and so much more. While I am a social person, the excruciating pain I was in made it nearly impossible for me to leave my house, which really affected my mental health. I visited many physicians hoping to figure out the cause of my pain and find a solution, but each one wrote me off. When I had my first appointment with Dr. Sama, it finally felt like someone was listening to me and taking my pain seriously.
The day I found out I was a candidate for surgery, my whole life changed, something all my friends and family noticed as well. After my surgery, I became much happier and am able to do so many things I couldn’t before. I can spend time with friends and family again, walk without having to stop several times and even do small things like load my dishwasher.
There is no place in the world like HSS and SpineCare of NY, it is a well-oiled machine and each staff member I encountered was so lovely and kind. The entire process from beginning to end went smoothly, and everyone made sure I felt comfortable and at ease from beginning to end. The people are the reason that SpineCare and HSS are so great.
I have always had such a high regard for physicians, and it meant the world to me when I visited Dr. Sama and he truly listened and cared about my wellbeing. Dr. Sama gave me the freedom of movement and I am forever thankful – he is magic. I continue to recommend Dr. Sama to any person that is in pain, because I know he will be able to change their life.

I started experiencing pain in my leg about five years ago, which progressively got worse, causing extreme sciatica pain in both of my legs. Before the pain started, I was an extremely active person and loved taking long walks, ballroom dance lessons, gardening and cooking. The severe leg pain made it hard for me to do all the things I enjoyed most. I couldn’t even walk to the end of my driveway without having to stop. I felt my life was on hold and was truly miserable, I wanted my quality of life back.
I tried everything to alleviate the pain, including regular visits to the chiropractor, acupuncture, and pain management, which included many injections that only gave me temporary relief. I finally came to the realization that I would have to have surgery, so, although it frightened me, I accepted that surgery was going to be my best option.
My mind instantly jumped to Dr. Sama who I had met over 14 years ago when I took my father to see him. Immediately, I knew that he was the only person that I trusted to perform my surgery. I visited Dr. Sama with tears in my eyes asking him to fix me and take away my pain, and that was exactly what he did.
I really cannot say enough good things about Dr. Sama and the entire HSS staff. The surgery process was smooth from the beginning to end. Dr. Sama is warm and compassionate and makes you feel like a part of his family, and, although the thought of surgery scared me, I knew I was in the best hands. Each staff member made sure I always felt comfortable and had everything I needed, and Dr. Sama was sure to explain every single step to me.
Dr. Sama is not only an expert in his field, but he is extremely empathetic. Thanks to him I now have my life back and I am so happy. Less than a year after my surgery, I can now hold my grandchildren without pain, and I even danced at my granddaughter’s party! I’ve been spending hours working on my garden, and I’ve been building up my stamina to walk a 5k, which is my newest goal that I am excited to achieve.
If I could share one thing with people living in pain, I would encourage them to visit Dr. Sama and can assure that they’ll be in great hands.
Remember to live your life to the fullest and don’t wait any longer for surgery.
Ted

I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis five years ago, which caused me extreme pain and made it difficult for me to stand and walk for a long period of time. I tried many things to alleviate the pain, including epidurals and physical therapy, and although they helped at times, nothing lasted long term.
The entire process with Dr. Sama, from testing and imaging, to scheduling the surgery, pre-op testing and conducting the actual surgery, was extremely well managed and timely. I couldn’t be happier with the experience I had with Dr. Sama and his entire staff. They made me feel comfortable and were always accessible to answer all of my questions, even after the surgery.
Now just eight weeks post-op and in my second week of physical therapy, I am able to walk farther and stand longer than I was before without any pain or discomfort, and I am focusing on gaining strength in my lower back and legs.
Spinal surgery can be extremely intimidating, but Dr. Sama and his team at SpineCare of NY and HSS made the entire process as comfortable as it could be and gave me the confidence to make the decision to have surgery. I can’t thank everyone enough for where I am today, and where I hope to be after 12 weeks of physical therapy. I would tell anyone in a similar situation not to wait so long for the surgery and to go to SpineCare of NY as soon as possible.

I started experiencing numbness and tingling in both of my legs into my feet, which got worse and became debilitating, inhibiting my daily functions. Prior to getting surgery, I tried injection shots and therapy to assist with the pain, which had no results and ultimately made my condition worse.
When I realized surgery was the only remaining option, I visited a few doctors who told me it would be an extensive procedure involving rods and screws that would leave me incapacitated for at least three months. My first appointment with Dr. Hughes was a breath of fresh air, as he recommended a different procedure than the other doctors and I would be out of the hospital within one day of my surgery.
Dr. Hughes and the entire HSS and SpineCare team were excellent. The day of surgery went exactly as I was told it would and was very regimented, and the team made sure I was comfortable throughout the entire process. I cannot thank Dr. Hughes enough for completely fixing the pain and numbness I was feeling in my legs. It has only been two months since my surgery, and I am back to a normal lifestyle and able to do my daily activities with no apprehension. I continue to tell anyone in the same position as me to schedule an appointment with Dr. Hughes.

Before my surgery with Dr. Sama, my quality of life was extremely poor. The pain I was experiencing prevented me from doing anything since it was hard for me to walk anywhere or even stand up for a short period of time. I had severe pain for several years, and even had surgery in 2019 with another doctor, which unfortunately resulted in infection and even more pain.
My experience with Dr. Sama and the SpineCare of NY staff was superb. Each staff member went above beyond and showed true compassion for the patients. During my first appointment with Dr. Sama, I could tell that he truly cares about his patients, and he really took the time to figure out the best way to treat me. Dr. Sama first recommended a Medial Branch Block (MBB) procedure for me followed by a Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) procedure but the pain still persisted. At that point, he recommended spine surgery.
After being under Dr. Sama’s care for almost 10 months, I had my surgery scheduled and was eager to have the procedure. I was incredibly impressed with Dr. Sama’s attention to detail and thoroughness throughout the process. Immediately after my surgery, I noticed feeling had returned to my feet, which is something I had not anticipated would happen as I had no feeling in my feet for years.
Less than a year after my surgery, I was able to leave my house, stand and sit longer, help my wife in the kitchen and exercise. It is great to no longer need a walker or brace – the difference is truly night and day, and I am so happy with the progress I have made. I encourage anyone in the same position as me to stop suffering and go see Dr. Sama. You really can put your life in his hands and trust that his team will provide you with exceptional care.

I experienced nerve pain in my right lower back and leg for 10 years and tried many temporary approaches to reduce pain from chiropractors, massage and pain management until they no longer helped. I eventually struggled through my daily activities even though I’m athletic, fit and have always been an active person, but the pain made it increasingly difficult to do things that were once easy. When it became hard for me to carry my son following his birth in 2020, I knew I needed surgery, but had to search for the best surgeon for the job.
I went to five consultations which didn’t impress me before finding Dr. Cammisa. After my initial consultation appointment with Dr. Cammisa I instantly knew that he would be the one I wanted to perform my surgery. I was incredibly impressed with Dr. Cammisa’s consultation visit approach and the experience I had in his office was what clearly presented his extensive knowledge and expertise.
Dr. Cammisa was always patient with me during my decision-making period. He always made himself available and happy to address any questions and concerns I had. He would personally call me by phone to discuss my concerns, which made me feel comfortable since we both agreed this was a serious procedure.
Throughout the entire process Dr. Cammisa was extremely meticulous, thorough, and I appreciated his attention to detail. My surgery was a year ago in the summer of 2022 and it truly feels like my life has been renewed… I feel like I am 25 years old again! I am now able to walk, jog, bike and swim as much as I want, carry my son and workout at the gym without any pain or restrictions, which has been amazing.
If anyone is experiencing the severe nerve root stenosis pain I was and considering surgery, I can assure you Dr. Frank Cammisa Jr. can help and it’s going to be worth getting your life back to that comfort zone.

For 25 years, I experienced severe spinal stenosis and knew I needed surgery, but I pushed it off because I was scared. Before resulting to surgery, I tried a few less invasive approaches like physical therapy and injections. While these approaches helped maintain me, it was not a permanent solution.
I was always able to walk but was prohibited from doing any vigorous activity, and it got to a point where traveling became an issue. I was always a robust and vibrant person and felt that my pain started changing me. About a year ago, I felt my back collapsing and was recommended to make an appointment with Dr. Sama. My first appointment with Dr. Sama was phenomenal, he was extremely prepared and more thorough than any doctor I have ever been to. I felt a huge wave of relief when Dr. Sama told me he could help me, I truly felt like I could cry and could not wait to get the surgery.
The entire surgery process was seamless, and HSS is an extremely well-oiled machine. Each staff member had a role, and everyone was very kind, considerate and knowledgeable. Only a couple months after surgery, I am back to doing everything as normal. Each day I feel stronger than the day before and have many goals that I plan to achieve in the next year. If there is anyone in the same position as me, I urge you to go and see Dr. Sama!

I started experiencing excruciating pain in my legs which progressively got worse. I was always an active person, but my leg pain made it hard for me to walk or stand for long periods of time. The pain became debilitating and affected my daily life, which is when I knew I had to do something about it.
I was able to schedule my surgery with Dr. Hughes within three weeks of my first consultation and the entire process was seamless. The day of the surgery went extremely smoothly and Dr. Hughes and the entire HSS and SpineCare team were truly amazing. I could not have asked for a better experience and appreciated the entire team constantly checking on me.
It has only been a little over three months since my surgery and I feel completely back to normal. I was amazed at how quickly my leg pain disappeared following my procedure. I am now able to walk farther and stand for longer, and the most rewarding thing is being able to play with my granddaughter again. If you’re in the same position as me, I encourage you to seek help and visit Dr. Hughes so you can have your life back.

In 2014, I started noticing signs of scoliosis and had been trying to get it corrected ever since but had no luck. Finally I found Dr. Sama, who was willing to perform a surgery that would help me substantially. Dr. Sama was very honest and upfront and took the time to explain that the surgery did have risks, but after meeting with him I felt confident that I wanted to go through with it.
Before my surgery, I was fortunately able to live my regular life and I learned to live with my condition and was well adapted to it. However, people always asked me about my condition and wanted to know what was wrong with me, which is the main reason I wanted it corrected. My scoliosis was so noticeable, and I really hated the way I looked.
At this point, I have had two surgeries with Dr. Sama and each time the experience was extremely organized, and the process was smooth and easy. I am so happy with my results and my quality of life has improved tremendously. I look like a different person and am much taller. Before meeting Dr. Sama, I was at the point where I had given up because no doctor had been able to help me. I am grateful to have found Dr. Sama and for his willingness to do this surgery, which changed my life.

Before my surgery, I experienced severe pain and limitations that came out of nowhere. Once the pain started, it got worse very quickly. I had a previous condition that made me high risk and with this added pain, it was hard to do anything. Doing daily tasks and walking were extremely challenging because of the severe pain I was experiencing. My quality of life was very poor.
From my first introduction with Dr. Cammisa, there was a weight lifted off my shoulders and I knew he was the person I wanted to be my doctor. Dr. Cammisa knew that I was high risk and was able to schedule my surgery immediately, I went for surgery less than a week after my initial appointment. I was impressed with Dr. Cammisa and his entire staff, the process was seamless, and I couldn’t believe how well I was treated while at the hospital.
Dr. Cammisa is an angel, and his team is truly top notch. Their expertise is beyond any words that I can properly narrate, and my husband and I tear up when thinking and talking about how great Dr. Cammisa is and how lucky we have been.
Lynne M.

The quality of care I received by Dr. Frank Camissa and his team at Spine Care of NY throughout my laminectomy/spine fusion process was impeccable. My experience and results have confirmed I chose the best of the world’s spine surgeons!
Rudy M.

You can’t find a better surgical facility than the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in NYC. It is state of the art for medical procedures combined with top notch doctors employing cutting edge technologies. Dr. Frank Cammisa is the best spinal surgeon in the country and a terrific and compassionate physician who takes the time to meet with you and analyze and discuss your particular situation. I can’t say enough about HSS and Dr. Cammisa and his staff.
Loretta F.

Dr. Hughes is a genius! Though I’m still not 100%, I’m 99%. I have recommended him to several people for surgery. I don’t know if they contacted his office but if they haven’t more the fool them. He is the only surgeon for my back.
Nicholas T.

The entire staff of NY Spine Care are outstanding, very responsive and always willing to listen and offer solutions. I am not sure I can add much to Dr. Camissa’s already stellar reputation, however my experience was simply amazing. I had work done on both my cervical and lumbar and Dr. Camissa was extremely forthright about the procedure, risks, and recovery which prepared me for any eventuality. Both my surgeries were a success and I am forever indebted to Dr. Cammisa and his staff.
David R.

Dr. Hughes is an amazing spinal surgeon. He does a great physical examination along with understanding the imaging. My operation for spinal stenosis went well and I started walking the next morning and came home the day after. The office is very responsive even though VERY busy. I went from a wreck to a mobile oldster in a vet short time.
Doris O.

Great experience. Doctor Hughes is an extraordinary doctor. After my surgery, I am a new person. All staff are excellent and caring. Nurses are the best, they treated me like a queen. I am truly grateful!
Lisa C.

Dr. Hughes and his entire staff were professional, caring and courteous. Dr. Hughes gave me great advice on how to move forward after my spine surgery. I would recommend Dr. Hughes highly. I appreciate his care and concern.
