fusion surgeries

In some cases, decompression alone may relieve pain, but it can make the spine less stable. In these situations, your surgeon may recommend a decompression and fusion. The decompression relieves the nerve pressure, and the fusion stabilizes the spine, preventing further problems and improving long-term outcomes.

Fusion surgery is designed to stabilize the spine. If your spinal condition has led to instability or excessive movement between vertebrae—due to injury, degeneration, or another issue—fusion surgery helps by permanently connecting two or more vertebrae. This is done using bone grafts, screws, implants, or plates to promote the bones fusing together over time. The result is a stronger, more stable spine that reduces pain caused by abnormal motion.

decompression surgeries

Decompression surgery focuses on relieving pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. This pressure is often caused by conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or bone spurs. During this procedure, your surgeon removes the structures that are compressing your nerves—such as part of a disc, ligament, or bone—to alleviate pain, tingling, and numbness. Many patients experience significant improvement in symptoms and mobility after this surgery.

When it comes to effectively treating conditions of the spine, some patients require more than just decompression or fusion alone. To relieve pain, restore mobility, and stabilize the spine, SpineCare of NY offers advanced procedures that combine both fusion and decompression techniques for optimal spine support.

Dr. Hughes is a genius! Though I’m still not 100%, I’m 99%. I have recommended him to several people for surgery. I don’t know if they contacted his office but if they haven’t more the fool them. He is the only surgeon for my back.

Dr. Hughes is an amazing spinal surgeon. He does a great physical examination along with understanding the imaging. My operation for spinal stenosis went well and I started walking the next morning and came home the day after. The office is very responsive even though VERY busy. I went from a wreck to a mobile oldster in a vet short time.

The 3 sections of the spine

Educating Our patients On Their Journey

Cervical

The cervical portion of the spine connects the base of the skull to the torso. It supports the head and allows it to flex, extend, and rotate. It also serves as a stable conduit for the arteries, nerves, and structures that join together the head and body.

C1 – C7

The most common conditions associated with this section of the spine are neck pain, spondylosis, cervical fractures, and spinal stenosis. These can cause significant disruption in the mobility of the head, leading to pain and stiffness.

The 3 sections of the spine

Educating Our patients On Their Journey

Thoracic

The thoracic portion of the spine provides stability for the upper part of the body, protecting the spinal cord, supporting breathing, and providing attachment for the ribs. Although less mobile than the upper and lower parts of the spine, it plays a central role in keeping the body upright.

T1 – T12

The most common conditions associated with this section of the spine are fractures, kyphosis, and myelopathy. Instability or compression of this region can lead to concerns with posture, especially in older individuals.

The 3 sections of the spine

Educating Our patients On Their Journey

Lumbar

The lumbar portion of the spine transfers weight from the upper body to the legs, allowing movement in all directions. It’s also integral to carrying sensory and motor information to and from the lower body through the spinal cord.

L1 – S1

The most common conditions associated with this section of the spine are sciatica, spondylolisthesis, herniated discs, and degenerative disc disease. These conditions can significantly affect mobility, especially while walking and being active.
