What is Scoliosis Reconstruction?
Scoliosis reconstruction is a type of spine surgery that is meant to address the severe curvature of the spine known as scoliosis. Those with very minor scoliosis may not notice the symptoms of their condition and may never require surgery, but those with significant or severe scoliosis may suffer from symptoms such as breathing problems, back pain, instability, and asymmetrical posture. In the case of spinal curvature with a degree of 50 or more, scoliosis reconstruction may be required.
Who is a Candidate for Scoliosis Reconstruction?
Candidates for scoliosis reconstruction surgery typically include individuals with severe spinal curvature that causes significant pain, functional impairment, or respiratory issues and who have not found relief through non-surgical treatments. This procedure is often recommended for patients with progressive scoliosis, particularly those whose spinal deformity is worsening despite conservative management or who have a spinal curve greater than 45 to 50 degrees. Additionally, candidates are usually those whose spinal deformity impacts their quality of life and daily activities and who are in good overall health to undergo a major surgical intervention.
The Scoliosis Reconstruction Procedure
The scoliosis reconstruction procedure at SpineCare of NY is performed using general anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable throughout the duration of your surgery. Your surgeon will access your spine through a posterior mid-line incision. Next, they will affix pedicle screws into the affected vertebrae of the spine. The fixation and instrumentation of the pedicle screws allow your surgeon to correct the position of the spine and stabilize the unstable segments. Next, a keyhole opening is made in the back of the spine to alleviate pressure on the nerves and alleviate leg symptoms.
Results and Recovery from Scoliosis Reconstruction
Following your scoliosis reconstruction, you will have a 2–3-night hospital stay. For the first three months, you will be asked to work on regaining your cardiovascular stamina through activities like walking, using a stationary bike, or elliptical. You will need to avoid lifting any heavy objects above fifteen pounds and participating in torsional activities like golf or tennis. You will begin outpatient physical therapy after your three-month follow-up appointment where you will work on core stabilization exercises. At the 6 month mark, x-rays will be taken to confirm the fusion is healed. If everything looks good, all restrictions will be lifted at this time.
